The Dalai Lama Joins Twitter

Published on February 23, 2010 by in Social Search

It’s definitely a sign that Twitter has become a monolithic force in the cyber world: one of the world’s holiest men has established a presence on the social networking site.

Last year there were some issues with a fake Dalai Lama joining the Twitter world, but he was discovered, and the event brought to attention the need for verification in Twitter accounts.

This @DalaiLama account has been verified, and it is the real deal. Indeed, Twitter’s new vice president of communications, Sean Garrett, welcomed the spiritual leader to the sit. Check out his account here. As yet, he only has a few posts, but it’ll be interesting to see how he gets on as he gets more into the world of Twittering. He already has over 30,000 followers, and as yet is not following anyone, himself. He has only one favorite link posted: photos of the democracy service metal 2010.

Twitter founder Evan Willams posted a somewhat misleading tweet yesterday saying that he’d asked the Dalai Lama if he’d be interested in using Twitter, when he met him in LA. “He laughed,” posted Evans. Not long after, the holy man’s Twitter account was visible to the world.
