According to a recently released study by eMarketer, Brazil’s internet users are growing at a rapid pace. The study, which includes all ages and access locations in Brazil, shows that the total number of internet users in Brazil at 44.2 million people for 2009. This number is expected to climb substantially by 2013, when it is expected to hit 64.6 million. This represents a compound annual growth rate of 7.9 percent.

Data from another study done from September to November, 2008 showed that internet penetration in Brazil was highest between the ages of 10 to 34. Most likely to be online were those users between the ages of 16 to 24. Interestingly, the gender divide was shown to be relatively even, with 41 percent of Brazilian males and 38 percent of Brazilian females using the internet.

Log-in Location

In Brazil’s urban areas, there was a 49 percent internet penetration rate. The number was significantly less in rural areas, where the penetration rate was only 18 percent.

Data from Nielson Online shows that in July 2009, Brazil had 27.5 million at-home internet users. These users averaged 41 online hours per month, and tended to visit around 70 different domains.

Online Shopping Growing Steadily

The “Web Shopper’s Report,” put together by e-bit, showed that there were around 17 million online shoppers in Brazil in 2009. The report predicts that Brazil’s online shoppers will spend around $5.7 billion USD online this year, an impressive increase of 61 percent over 2007.

Ipsos Public Affairs surveyed Brazilian consumers in September to November 2008, and found that 16 percent of them were online buyers. The most avid online shopping age group was shown to be those between 25 and 34 – with 23 percent having reported making a purchase online. Those aged 35 and older where second most likely to have made an online purchase, at 22 percent. The gender divide was shown to be relatively equal, at 18 percent for males and 14 percent for females.

But what were these shoppers buying? Consumer electronics were shown to be most popular, followed by books, newspapers, magazines.

Brazil’s Online Advertising Budgets Increase

An estimated $537 million USD will be spent on online advertising in Brazil this year, according to Projeto Inter-Meios 2008 data. This represents a 30 percent increase from 2008. This internet advertising growth outpaces that of all other forms of advertising in Brazil in 2009.

A study by Deloitte in September to October 2009 showed that 45 percent of Brazilians find that internet advertising has the most impact on their buying decisions. Internet advertising was in third place, after TV and magazine advertising. Next in line were newspaper and radio advertising, followed by billboards or outdoor advertising.

Mobile phone advertising was also found to be a big hit in Brazil, with 19 percent believing it to have a significant impact on their purchase decisions. Respondents in Germany, Japan, the US and the UK were in disagreement, at three percent, seven percent, three percent and five percent respectively.
