Google’s new search options panel recently became available on its image search. This new tool allows users to search images according to color and image type.

When Google’s new search options became available a few months ago, they promised similar functionality across their other search properties, and, as usual, Google has followed through.

Using the color search feature, users can specify whether they want only color images, or only black and white images, as well as allowing the searcher to specify images that contain a specific color. It’s also possible for users to specify the specific kind of image they are searching for, such as a photo, clip art, line drawing, or face. If that weren’t enough, users can also specify the size of the image they are searching for. Users can choose from a list of commonly searched-for sizes, or specify the precise size of their choice, or image larger than a certain size, including 70 mega pixels or more. However, users are advised to ensure their computers can handle these big images before making the query, since these sizes can crash most regular PCs.

According to the official Google blog, the new layout makes it “faster and easier to combine and toggle between options. They also hinted that there may be additional search options in the future.

The simple feature could save users some time, allowing them to easily narrow down their image searching results to get exactly what they’re looking for. It’s a feature that will definitely prove quite useful; so useful, in fact, that it’s surprising that it hasn’t been introduced until now.

To use any of the new image options, click ‘show options’ in the blue bar on the search results page.
